MIDDLESEX BLOWN AWAY AS WINNING RUN ENDS

On an afternoon more suited to any pursuit involving the use of kites Middlesex’s friendly squad welcomed their counterparts from Leicestershire CBA to Finchley Bowls Club.

The strong winds certainly made for an interesting afternoons bowls with additional obstacles being provided on the green in the way of various sized leaves and twigs. Those bowlers who chose to repeatedly try and keep their rink clear probably finished the afternoon with back ache and one arm longer than the other!

In terms of the match Middlesex were expecting a tough afternoon against one of their bogey sides and so it proved to be. Through out the afternoon the overall score was very tight with barely a few shots in it either way at any point.

At the end of the game the sides had shared 3 rinks each, with less than 4 shots difference on 5 of the rinks the ultimate difference came down to the one rink with a 13 shot difference. Sadly this was not in Middlesex’s favour and the winning run ended as we slipped to a 110 -116 defeat.

Top rink for Middlesex, winning 19-15, was Gerald Parrish (Hayes), Peter Hicks (Edmonton), Don Dorling (Broomfield, Hon Secretary) and Tony Waller (Ladygate).

After the match David Airey of Bush Hill Park was presented with his colts badge.

Special mention also to 21 year old Myles Clements of the Leicestershire side. Great to see a “youngster” playing in a County Friendly, something that should be actively encouraged for the future of these fixtures. Double congratulations to him as he received his Leicestershire Colts badge after the game.

So the winning run has ended, Brian Elbourn and his squad will be looking to start a new run as soon as possible. Their first opportunity to do this comes on June 2nd at West Ealing when the Isle of Wight CBA are the visitors.

Please note for anyone planning on attending this game it is a 13.30 start.
